This project is essentially a plan to write a book on the interrelationships between science, technology and agriculture in India, with specific reference to the challenges of sustainable development and climate change. The book would be historically based but contemporarily informed; contextualised globally but founded on the Indian experience; foregrounded in an ethical philosophy of agricultural science; written in an inter-disciplinary framework, bringing together questions of history, philosophy, political economy and science and technology studies. It will also respond to various viewpoints on the future of agricultural science and technology in the current global milieu.
The book will attempt an inter-disciplinary history of agricultural science and technology in India. While there have been accounts of the sector from the point of view of individual disciplines, this book would try to bring together insights from history, economics, politics and science into a unified platform. Earlier tendencies to focus on a single discipline had meant a loss of focus on complexities emanating from other disciplinary perspectives.
