The unprecedented impact and pace of current environmental change calls for visions that counteract the dominant dystopian discourse and provide realistic examples of transformative changes that contribute to a better world, such as the already growing number of new initiatives, projects, practices, or ways of acting that seek to create a future that is just and sustainable. In parallel to the increasing number of actors and organisations mobilised to create a just and sustainable future, scientific research has rapidly grown. Yet, most of the research on transformative change for sustainability has been done at the global scale, and a limited portion has featured the transformation that is fostered by local initiatives in Africa.
In this project, I aim to develop an interdisciplinary methodological approach to comprehensively understand how sustainability transformations happened in African contexts. The resulting methodological approach will pioneer new and integrative thinking on sustainability transformations and will identify the vital elements of African initiatives, projects, and practices that are essential for fostering transformations towards a sustainable and just future.
