Sishuwa Sishuwa is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of History at Stellenbosch University. Previously, Sishuwa was a Visiting Scholar in the Center for African Studies at Harvard University, a Lecturer in African History at the University of Zambia, and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Cape Town. He received his DPhil in Modern History from the University of Oxford.
Sishuwa researches the political history of Southern Africa since the twentieth century. Since graduation in 2017, he has edited three special issues of academic journals and published over 20 peer-reviewed articles in major African Studies journals on elections, political leadership, ethnicity, historical biography, populism, civil society, nationalism, and democracy. His books include Party Politics and Populism in Zambia (James Currey, 2024) and the co-edited Cambridge History of Democracy in Africa (Cambridge University Press, forthcoming). He is currently completing another monograph, Gunning for Democracy in Africa, which explains why the military upholds democracy in some countries, not others, since the return to multiparty politics in the early 1990s.
Sishuwa is a member of the Southern African Historical Society, the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), the American Historical Association, and the Royal Historical Society of the United Kingdom.
