Dr. Peter Waweru Mwangi is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Human Anatomy and Medical Physiology at the University of Nairobi, with over two decades of experience in cardiometabolic research, and experimental therapeutics. He holds a PhD in Medical Physiology and has since developed a substantial research portfolio spanning metabolic syndrome, HIV associated cardiometabolic dysfunction, natural product pharmacology, climate-related health risks and spectroscopy based biomarker discovery.
His recent work includes investigations into antiretroviral associated metabolic disease, dietary modulation of cardiometabolic risk, Raman spectroscopic diagnostics, and plant derived therapeutic compounds, with publications in PLOS One, Frontiers in Pharmacology, Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research, and Pharmaceutical Biology. He serves as a Co-Investigator on several high-impact international and national research grants funded by institutions such as the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC). His recent research investigates mitochondrial function and cardiometabolic disease in people living with HIV, as well as health systems and policy responses for NCD caregivers and crisis-driven cardiometabolic care.
His work integrates clinical physiology, community health, and policy engagement. He is a Steering Committee member for the ARUA Center of Excellence for NCDs, a founding executive member of the Kenya Soc
