Dr Mukama is a Senior Lecturer and Examination Coordinator in the Department of Food Science and Technology, Faculty of Science, Kyambogo University and a Research Fellow (Iso Lomso) at the Stellenbosch Institute of Advanced Study. He recently (2026) did fellowship at Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. He possesses a PhD in Food Science with a specialisation in Food Engineering, Food Packaging Design and Postharvest Technology from Stellenbosch University (2019). His research focusses on application of engineering principles in food cold chains in postharvest handling and food package design.
Dr Mukama has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, including Journal of Food Engineering, Food Packaging and Shelf Life among others. He is a Premier Member of the Uganda Food Science and Technology Association (UGAFOST) and a member of the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS). He is currently the Principal Investigator of the Cool-iT Project under the European Union Food Safety for Africa Grant.
In addition to being a trained Science Communicator, Matia is passionate about science communication and translation of generated scientific knowledge into tangible society solutions. Outside his research, Matia teaches courses on food engineering and plant design and process control. In his spare time, he enjoys soccer, running and mountain hiking.
