Lennart Bergström received a PhD in Physical Chemistry at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in 1992 and held several positions at the Institute for Surface Chemistry before joining Stockholm University in 2004 as Professor of Materials Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry. He serves as a member of the University reference group for the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability (WISE), and as deputy director for the MISTRA SafeChem programme. Dr Bergström is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) and a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

His research activities focus on development of sustainable materials and processes. Colloidal processing of organic and inorganic nanoparticles based on renewable, recycled and Earth-abundant resources are at the core of the activities. He teaches sustainable chemistry where the possibilities with Chemistry are contrasted with its adverse effects on the environment and human health. The time at STIAS will be used to investigate how chemistry could (and should) be reimagined and outline possible ways forward.
