Dr Farai Mlambo is a Senior Lecturer in Digital Business at Wits Business School (WBS), University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), South Africa. He holds a PhD in Mathematical Statistics from Nelson Mandela University and is Co-Director of the Statistical Machine Learning Laboratory (Stat-ML Lab) at Wits. He is also a Fellow of the Wits Machine Intelligence, Neural Discovery (MIND) Institute and an Associate (Statistics) of the National Institute for Theoretical and Computational Sciences (NITheCS).
His research spans probabilistic machine learning, Bayesian inference, uncertainty quantification and explainable artificial intelligence, with applications in business, finance, healthcare and energy. He investigates how statistical and computational methods can support reliable, interpretable and contextually relevant decision-making.
As a STIAS Iso Lomso Fellow, his research programme, “Uncertainty-Aware AI for Business Decision-Making in Africa”, explores how artificial intelligence can account for uncertainty and support decisions in African business environments. His work connects methodological development with practical challenges involving limited data, complex systems and the responsible use of AI.
Beyond research, he teaches data analytics and artificial intelligence, supervises postgraduate researchers, and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and research capacity development across Africa.
