Dr David Niyukuri is the Coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Research Program in Public Health at the Doctoral School of the University of Burundi, and an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics and the Institute of Applied Statistics at the same institution. He is also a Research Associate at the South African Centre for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis (SACEMA). Dr Niyukuri holds degrees in mathematics and epidemiology from the University of Burundi and Stellenbosch University.

He is the Founding Coordinator of the Central Africa Epidemic Modelling Network (CEpiNet), a regional modelling initiative jointly established by the University of Burundi, the University of Kinshasa (INOHA/UNIKIN), and the National Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB). His research focuses on the mathematical modelling of infectious disease transmission dynamics, with applications in outbreak preparedness and response. He leads multidisciplinary epidemiological studies on malaria, mpox, and other infectious diseases in collaboration with institutions including the University of Notre Dame, the University of Toronto, Imperial College London, the National University of Singapore, AIMS-RIC, and the National Institute of Public Health of Burundi. Between 2019 and 2023, he contributed to the WHO Health Emergencies Programme, supporting surveillance and responses to Ebola, COVID-19, and other public health emergencies.
