Ariel Goobar is Professor of Physics at Stockholm University, where he
has held a chair since 1999, and Director of the Oskar Klein Centre
for Cosmoparticle Physics since 2022. He also directs the EDUCATE
Centre at OKC. He earned his PhD in particle physics from Stockholm
University in 1992 with a thesis on Higgs boson searches at the DELPHI
experiment at CERN, before moving to Lawrence Berkeley National
Laboratory, where he joined the Supernova Cosmology Project. His
research focuses on observational cosmology, particularly the use of
Type Ia supernovae as cosmological distance indicators,
gravitationally lensed supernovae, and the electromagnetic
counterparts of gravitational-wave sources. He is a long-standing
member of the Supernova Cosmology Project, whose discovery of the
accelerating expansion of the universe led to the 2011 Nobel Prize in
Physics, and contributes to major time-domain surveys including the
Zwicky Transient Facility and the Vera C. Rubin Observatory
(LSST). His distinctions include the 2015 Breakthrough Prize in
Fundamental Physics, the 2007 Gruber Prize in Cosmology, and the 2004
Gustafsson Prize. He was elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of
Sciences in 2016.
