Dr. Alyssa Joyce is an Associate Professor at the University of Gothenburg and an expert in marine biotechnology and ecological engineering. She leads international, cross-disciplinary research at the intersection of sustainable food systems, renewable energy and water resource management.
Her research focuses on aquatic and blue biotechnology, including aquaculture, aquaponics and ocean-based bioproducts, with the goal of strengthening food security, improving resource efficiency and building climate resilience. Her work translates science into practical solutions by informing sustainable agriculture and aquaculture policy, advancing circular-economy strategies and developing scalable approaches to sustainable production.
Dr. Joyce has served as principal investigator on numerous international initiatives funded by organisations such as the European Commission, the Swedish International Development Agency, Belmont Forum, Food Systems and Climate (FOSC), Future Earth, Swedish Council for Higher Education, Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education (STINT), Formas, the Swedish Research Council, Vinnova and others.
Her research group collaborates extensively with African academic, industry and government partners, focused on sustainable resource governance and resilient food systems. Her research includes projects and collaborations across the African continent addressing sustainable aquaculture, agroecological production, and integrated water-energy-nutrient systems. She is a 2027 STIAS Fellow, where her African focus will be an important part of her broader research on how circular food systems can support equitable and climate-resilient development.
