Third Iso Lomso cohort of fellows announced

STIAS today announced its third cohort of Iso Lomso fellows for applications submitted during its last call. The STIAS Research and Fellowship Programme Committee recently concluded its selection of the Iso Lomso cohort of fellows for 2019. Seven candidates were offered the prestigious three-year fellowship at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study. They join the first cohort of five candidates and the second cohort of seven candidates to constitute the current STIAS Iso Lomso fellows.

The seven selected candidates with their respective project titles are:

• Tatenda Dalu (Male, Zimbabwean), PhD from Rhodes University in 2015, currently based at the Department of Ecology and Resource Management, University of Venda in South Africa
  • Assessing contribution and link between terrestrial and aquatic environment in estuarine environments
• Christine Hobden (Female, South African), PhD from University of Oxford in 2015, currently based at the Department of Philosophy, University of Fort Hare in South Africa
  • Citizenship, International Justice, and the View from the South
• Nkatha Kabira (Female, Kenyan), PhD from Harvard Law School in 2015, currently based at the Department of Private Law, University of Nairobi in Kenya
  • The Law of Commissions: a comparative study of the place of commissions in law and governance in Africa
• Elifuraha Laltaika (Male, Tanzanian), PhD from University of Arizona in 2016, currently based at the Faculty of Law, Tumaini University in Tanzania
  • Spotlighting social inclusion: protection of Africa’s hunter gatherers’ communal land rights in the context of sustainable development goals (SDGs) implementation
• James Ocita (Male, Ugandan), PhD from Stellenbosch University in 2013, currently based at the Department of Literature, Makerere University in Uganda
  • Mobility, Subjectivity and the Poetics of Space-making in the Western Indian Ocean Novels
• Ifeyinwa Okolo (Female, Nigerian), PhD from University of Ibadan in 2012, currently based at the Department of English and Literary Studies, Federal University Lokoja in Nigeria
  • Sexualities and (Dis)Abilities: (Re)Valuing Being Sexual Humans through Body Narratives
• Eric Otchere (Male, Ghanaian), PhD from University of Cape Coast in 2013, currently based at the Department of Music and Dance, University of Cape Coast in Ghana
  • Pacing within sonic spaces: a psychology of music and work

The first periods of residency for each of the fellows will occur between the months of July 2019 to June 2020. As with the first two cohorts, STIAS intends to approach several of its sister institutes for advanced study and others in view of a possible residency abroad for each of the fellows during 2020/2021. Members of the Fellowship and Research Programme Committee had earlier shortlisted 23 outstanding applications out of 99 submissions.
