Physics is one of the most established scientific disciplines in Cameroonian universities. However, this field is not taught and researched with the aim of addressing the country’s development needs, and has often remained disconnected from local challenges. The educational system has gradually decoupled science from development purposes. Most research activities have remained theoretical for a long time without practical applications. Only a few scholars have initiated research that is conceived, developed, and led by Cameroonians to promote national development and address pressing societal challenges. This new era of research that addresses local problems shapes this two-day workshop, which will be held at the University of Ngaoundéré in September 2026.

The workshop aims to bring together young African physicists who are committed to working collaboratively to foster and lay down foundations of a new era of low-cost applied physics that addresses local needs. It represents an opportunity for Africans to take ownership of innovation, create value for their communities, and contribute to the development of their countries. Although this era is still in early stages, this workshop is an opportunity for experienced and early-career researchers to present their work, and brainstorm ideas. This workshop also serves as a platform for building a network of African physicists dedicated to developing sustainable solutions within their communities and promoting science as a driver of development. Students, who are considered as the key stakeholders, are encouraged to participate.

Discussion during the workshop will focus on, but will not be limited to, the following topics:

  • Neuromorphic computing and engineering for physics research;
  • AI-assisted cryptography and computer science;
  • Quantum and classical reservoir computing;
  • AI-driven research in quantum optics & information, and quantum chemistry.

Local organizers: Prof Philippe Djorwe (Quantum Optics & Information), Prof Alexendre Noura (Image encryption and Signal Processing), Prof J. L. Kedieng Ebongue Fendji (Computer Science & Information), and Prof Joseph Yves Effa (Electronic, Information security, Chaos and Control theory).

The workshop is funded by the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS) through the Iso Lomso Fellowship programme in partnership with the University of Ngaoundéré, Cameroon.
