CRITERIA FOR EVALUATING RESEARCH PROPOSALS
The Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study promotes innovative research of the highest level on issues of the highest relevance for the country and for the continent.
STIAS Fellowship candidates are identified by STIAS in consultation with various stakeholder and advisory structures. There is no formal application procedure and STIAS does not consider unsolicited proposals. STIAS will respond though to enquiries and brief letters of intent.
The following criteria conform to the STIAS objectives and as such are important considerations in the evaluation of broader research proposals by the Fellowship and Programme Committee:
1. Level
Does the proposal entail research on the highest level? Are the proposed participants capable of delivering this?
2. Innovation
Is the project breaking new ground? Does it hold the promise of new insights and the potential to produce new knowledge?
3. Interdisciplinarity
To what extent is the project dependent on the co-operation and contribution of other disciplines?
4. Relevance
What relevance does the project have for South Africa and Africa as a whole?
5. Feasibility
How convincing is the proposed methodology and research design and how realistic is the research plan?
